Sunflower Class

WELCOME TO SUNFLOWER CLASS

Sunflower Class is our Year 1 and 2 class.

This Year Mrs Simons our senior teacher will teach the class on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

 On Wednesday mornings Mrs Atkins who is a HLTA, will teach the class. On Wednesday afternoons Mrs Harper a TA will lead the children in outdoor learning and Mrs Atkins will work with some of the children on Art and D.T. projects.

Mrs Elliott another HLTA will support the children in Sunflower Class every morning.

Please find below an information letter to provide you with everything you need to know about Sunflower Class for you to enable your child to settle well into the next term. Also to enable you to be aware and become involved with your child's learning there is a curriculum balloon which informs you of the learning your child will be completing over the next two terms as well as some home learning where you can help support your child at home.

EASTER NEST CAKES

On the final afternoon of term Sunflower Class enjoyed making Easter cakes to celebrate the forth coming celebration of Easter. The children enjoyed breaking up the cereal in their hands and mixing it into the melted chocolate. They each scooped a spoonful of the mixture into a cake case and added sone little chocolate eggs on top for decoration. Much fun was had by all!

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS

Today as part of our learning in history we completed some drama and freeze frames to show and explore our understanding of the emotions that must have been felt by both Orville and Wilbur and any wye witnesses on the day they first were able to fly their first aircraft for just 12 seconds.

MAKING SMOOTHIES

Today after tasting other smoothies, taking inspiration from their ingredients and then designing our own Sunflower Class, as the culmination of our DT learning and latest project  made our own smoothies. We have chosen from such ingredients as strawberries, pineapple, banana, avocado, orange, lime or lemon juice. Here we are making and tasting our smoothies  around the fire pit with the smores we made during our outdoor learning time. To celebrate our success we invited our parents in to taste our amazing smoothies. Look at this special time and achievements!

OUR EASTER SERVICE AT ST ANDREW'S CHURCH

Today we walked as a school to St Andrew's church to celebrate and perform our parts in the Easter service. As a group Sunflower class shared their experience of making their own hot cross and shared a song about the same subject.

 

OBSERVING WILD AND GARDEN FLOWERS AS WELL AS PHYSICAL AND HUMAN FEATURES AROUND THE VILLAGE OF MELLS

Today we went on a walk around the village of Mells with Bluebell class to look for and identify different physical and human features to reinforce their learning in geography. We also observed and found different garden and wild flowers we had been learning about in science lessons. Here is what we found!

HOT CROSS BUNS

Today as part of their learning about Lent and Easter the children all participate in baking Hot Cross Buns. We had great fun weighing out the ingredients and mixing all of it together to make a dough. After proving the dough we then rolled our own buns and added crosses to the top of them. After baking, the children enjoyed tasting them in a little picnic outside in the sunshine!

FRUIT TASTING

Today in DT the children were tasked with tasting different fruit and fruit juices in preparation for choosing the fruits and fruit juices they would like to include in their final smoothie. The children were tasting fruit and juices that they hade not tried before especially the lemon and lime juices! Look at the expressions on our faces!

A FUN SCARF ONLINE LESSON!

Today the children had an exciting opportunity to participate in an exciting online PHSE lesson. They had great fun creating actions, singing and dancing to enhance their learning about different feelings and how to manage them. The children also enjoyed interacting with the popular giraffe puppet named Harold.

PLANT HUNT

Today the children went on a plant hunt around our school to enrich and support their learning about wild and garden plants. The children were challenged to identify the plants they found with an identification sheet, to draw them and decide if they were a wild or garden plant. Here is what we found!

OUR MAGICAL FLOWERS FROM A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

Today inspired by Oberon's magical flower in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Sunflower Class enjoyed designing and making their own magical flowers using tissue paper, sequins, feathers, paper strips glitter and card. They also created special powers that their flowers would have to create magic within the forest. After we used the magical flowers to inspire our writing to describe them.

DT SKILLS

Today in our DT lesson we practised our fruit cutting and juicing skills in preparation to make our fruit smoothies in a few weeks! Take a look at our excellent skills!

GOLF FESTIVAL

After participating in two golf sessions with IG Sports coaches in our PE lessons over the last two weeks, we were invited to develop our new skills at golf festival today a Oakfield Academy with lots of other primary schools. Look at all the fun we had!

BOOK WEEK

Today the first day of our book week, we had great fun dressing up as our favourite book characters. See how fabulous we looked!

An Introduction to Plants

A Plant Hunt

Today the children in Sunflower Class went on a plant hunt in the front garden and in the back playground and field. They were looking for plants that were taller than them, that smelled beautiful, that were growing in strange places and ones that had trunks and flowers. Here is what we found.

BEAN INVESTIGATION

Today Sunflower Class set up their own bean seed investigation. The children were given two plastic cups, two paper towels and two seeds. They put a bean seed and paper towel in both cups but only added water to one of the cups. They labelled the cups. The children made a prediction about what we thought would happen to the seeds, one with and one without water. We shall need to wait and observe what happens...

CREATIVE HABITATS

As part of their learning about habitats, the children worked in partners to design and create their own 3D habitats with shoe boxes and craft materials. They were asked to think about their recent learning about habitats and consider both the plants and animals that live in either a Polar, Woodland, Rainforest or Ocean and create them.

WELLBEING WEEK

As part of our Wellbeing week the children enjoyed many exciting and fulfilling activities.

DEN BUILDING

Today as part of their outdoor learning Sunflower Class children had the opportunity to work together to enjoys some den building. Look at what fun we had!

 

COSMIC YOGA

Today the children took part in Cosmic Yoga lesson based on the Hungry Caterpillar. The children had lots of fun as they followed and acted out the story through yoga moves.

MOJO MOVES

Today as part of Wellbeing Week the children enjoyed a visit from Mojo Moves who led the children in her disco dance moves!

ARCHERY

Today we had fun in PE practising our archery skills with the IG Sports teachers!  Look what fun we had!

MYSTERIOUS CRASH SITE!

After break today when the children were coming into class they discovered a mysterious crash site! There was what seemed to be a UFO or spaceship on its side and other pieces of unidentified debris! What could this be?

GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS WOW DAY!

To celebrate the end of our learning based on this traditional tale we had a special dress up day where we either dressed up as Goldilocks or one of the bears. We also baked baby bear biscuits and made masks a well as design cottages out of Lego and other construction.

The Twinkly Nativity!

The children of Sunflower Class performed a fabulous 'Twinkly Nativity' Christmas play today. They sung so beautifully and presented their lines with such gusto, expression and enthusiasm all of the staff and their grown ups could not be more proud! Well done Sun flower Class children you were amazing!

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS LUNCH!

Today the children all enjoyed a very tasty roast dinner Christmas lunch al together in the hall. The children wore their Christmas jumpers as well as Santa hats and pulled crackers. A wonderful time was had by both staff and children! 

SHAPE HUNT!

Today we enjoyed using and exploring our outside area to find and identify 2D and 3D shapes. Here is what we found!

 

BEEBOT FUN!

We have been learning about programming Beebots sing code. We have been learning how to follow and execute programmes to complete a treasure hunt of animals on a Beebot grid. We followed the programmes and we were able to debug any problems in the programming  to find all the animals. We worked with our teacher Miss Worrallo to do this!

THE FAMOUS SCIENTIST JANE GOODALL

In science we have been learning about animals and how to group and classify them. As part of this work we have been learning about Jane Goodall. We made binoculars and we have enjoyed role playing as Jane Goodall and finding different Chimpanzees around our outdoor environment. We have been studying their expressions and activities.

DESIGNING A CHAIR FOR BABY BEAR

In Design and Technology lessons we have been learning about how to make strong structures. We have discovered that cylinders make the strongest structures. We tested this by exploring how many books our cylinder could hold. This will help us when we design our chairs for Baby Bear!

FINISHED CHAIRS FOR BABY BEAR

After testing the best structures to use to design a chair for Baby Bear. The children constructed their designs and then made the finishing touches to their chairs. When ready the children tested their chairs by placing Baby Bear on it to see if it was a good fit and strong enough to hold him. Look at our amazing designs! 

GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS

To embed and develop our understanding of the sequence of the traditional Tale of Goldilocks and The Three Bears, we made stick puppets and created puppets shows. We performed our stories for each other and had great fun! 

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Today day we observed two minutes silence at 11 o'clock at the of break time to remember all the soldiers and animals that have died during the wars around the world. In the afternoon we learned about why it is important to remember and why the poppy is used. We made our own stained glass window poppies to show our respects.

 

 

FIREWORKS FUN!

Today we learned about Guy Fawkes and his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. We sequenced and retold the story and created our own firework pictures to remember why we celebrate 5th November!

ARTS WEEK

ROCKING OUT WITH ROCKTOPUS!

Today day the children had a fabulous day creating a rock video with ROCKTOPUS. The children participated in a music workshop where they created a song based on our core value of Empathy and Compassion. The children helped and supported by ROCKTOPUS  wrote lyrics to the song and created their own dance moves!

CIRCUS SKILLS 

On the final day of our Arts week we had the opportunity to experience and participate in a circus skills workshop. We had so much fun learning new skills and working together!

 

MAKING BIRD SCULPTURES

Today as a culmination of our careful and creative study of birds we designed and created our own bird sculptures. During the week the children looked at feathers in detail as well as the different features of birds. With this knowledge we created our own using cardboard, paper, masking tape, oil pastels, felt-tips and tin foil. Take a look at our master pieces!

 

OBSERVING FEATHERS CLOSELY

This lesson we observed feathers closely and drew them in detail using different media including oil pastels, paint, charcoal, soft pencils and crayons.

EXPLORATION AND OBSERVATION OF BIRDS

Today in our art lesson the children were able to observe and study birds up close using video footage which was played and paused to allow the children to study different birds in detail to be able to draw their features with accuracy and confidence..

SUNFLOWERS

Today we learned about the famous artist Vincent van Gogh. We learned about the different paintings he created of sunflowers. Inspired by these great works of art we designed the front covers of our art books with our very own sunflower designs. Look at what a fantastic job we did!

HARVEST BAKING

Today Sunflower class enjoyed baking pumpkin muffins to celebrate harvest. We all worked together to puree the pumpkin, weigh out the ingredients, crack the eggs, mix the muffin mixture which we then put into cases to bake in the oven. After we had fun icing our muffin before we took them home to enjoy!

COMPARING CROCODILES

Today we used our greater than, less than crocodiles to compare numbers in a practical way using multi-link. In partners we were given two numbers to 10 to compare and using the multi-link we represented these numbers and positioned them correctly on our comparing crocodiles. Through this activity we were reinforcing our understanding of the greater than and less than symbol.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

Today we had fun during our Outdoor Learning time. We worked together to make dens and then enjoyed hot chocolate made from our new Ghillie kettle on the fire.

Maths Fun!

Today we enjoyed learning about doubles in maths. First of all we played a counting game to practice counting in twos. Then we completed a practical task in partners to calculate the doubles to 20 using multi-link.

Programming Beebots

Today in our computing lesson we initially spent time exploring how to turn on and instruct the Beebots to go forwards, backwards, left and right. While doing this we learned which buttons we needed to press to make the Beebot move.

We were then given the challenge to programme our Beebots to find and move to  different animals on our Beebots grids.

Autumn Days

Today in our English lesson week went outside to use our senses to explore the signs of Autumn to help us prepare for our Autumn poem writing. Look at the fund we had!

The Holy Trinity

Today we were learning about what Christians believe about God. As part of this lesson we learned about the Holy Trinity. 

To help us begin to remember we made doves, a symbol of the Holy Spirit and three leaf clovers to remind us of the three parts of the Holy Trinity.
