GEOGRAPHY

'You can travel the seas, poles, deserts and see nothing. To really understand the world you need to get under the skin of people and places. In other words, learn about geography.'  Michael Palin

Geography at Beckington and Mells, is an exciting subject which sets out to spark curiosity in our pupils.

Within our federations STEAM based cross curricular approach, Geography is an important subject acting as a driver for a rich variety of topics, across EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

Our cycle of topics provide the children the opportunity to learn and develop their geographical skills, both within and outside the classroom. Through outdoor learning, children are able to develop and enrich their classroom based learning such as investigating a variety of different habitats in the local area.

HISTORY

'A people without a knowledge of its past history, origin and culture, is like a tree without roots.'  Marcus Garvey

At Beckington and Mells, History is seen as an exciting, awe- inspiring subject which sets out to spark pupil’s curiosity of the past.

History is an important element of our schools STEAM based curriculum and is a driver for a rich variety of topics from EYFS to KS2.

Our history curriculum helps to develop children’s investigative, questioning and research skills, which they are able to bring to other subject areas as part of our cross curricular approach. As part of their programme of study, each year group and key stage have the opportunity to take part in enrichment opportunities, such as a trip to a local museum or recreated Roman villa.

An important aspect of the federations approach to history is to ensure that children are taught about significant individuals, both well known and local, who had an impact, a link too or were part of the period of history being taught.
