Writing

Our word of the week is …..bedraggled. See if you can use it in a sentence.

Write a superhero story

WAGOLL (what a good one looks like):

It has a title

At the beginning both the setting and characters are described

A problem is explained (in the middle)

And solved (at the end).

Challenge: use adventurous or unusual words

Finish your superhero story from last week.

Has the problem been explained and solved? Could someone draw your ending from what you have written? Has the “picture” been described well?

Don’t forget to re-read your sentences to check for errors in sense, spelling and punctuation.

 “Wow” words

Think about word choice. Which words sound better? Swap them about (substitute) to “polish” and to make it sound better.

Then copy out the new improved sentence (see attachments for more tasks like this. Choose either a mild or hot challenge).

The giant caterpillar was angry. He tore up the road. Cars scattered and rolled over like flies. People were going out of his way.

Suddenly Elastigirl appeared with Dash. Together they stretched a huge net over him and got him into the sky. Up, up, up they went until they reached the moon, where they left him.

If you look closely at night you might just spot him throwing rocks into craters. The end.

                  racing/sprinting/ running/ jogging

People were_______________________ out of the way.

What sounds better?

                         pulled/ dragged/pushed

They ____________________________him into the sky.

Have a got at “polishing”another story.

Then Ooni (the horrible fireball girl) got so angry that she went into flames. She touched the nearest tree and it burst into flames instantly. Then the next and the next, so that soon the whole park was on fire.

What sounds better? Swap in these words.

              got/shot/tumbled/ burst

She___________________________into flames.

Have a go a drawing the “picture” for this ending. Use story panels.

Onomatoepia

Draw words as they sound.

Writing

Our word of the week is …..nervous or nervously. See if you can use it in a sentence.

Long writing task

Write your own short superhero story

Look at other people's comic strips on this site. Are there any ideas you would like to “magpie” for yourself? You could use DRAMA to act the story out, so that you know what will happen. Or act it out using small world toys like Lego.

First make a story plan (with a beginning, a middle (the problem) and end). You could draw helpful pictures and words on a story mountain plan.

WAGOLL (what a good one looks like):

It has a title

At the beginning both the setting and characters are described

A problem is explained (in the middle)

And solved (at the end)

My own mother was 5. She told me that remembered going on a bus to her gran’s farm where they had a party with cake. The adults drank homemade wine and she was allowed to have a little sip! They listened to the music on the radio. Most of the men in the family weren’t there because they were all stationed abroad. Her own Daddy had been away in India for over 3 years. He was in the Royal Engineers. When he finally came home she couldn’t remember him and was very shy.

Dear Blackbird parents, carers and class,

I hope that you are all enjoying the sunny weather.

Well done Blackbird Class! You are really amazing! You have won the Doodlemaths trophy again this week with an amazing total of 2653 stars, Y1-1602, Y2-1051! WOW!

A special well done goes to William E (447),Ava (306),Reuben (114),Theo (147),Devon (215),Charlotte (150),Eloise (102),Kara (160),Iggy (197),Tilly (133),Addie ,Ellis and Max who all got well above their targets for the week!

Theo deserves a special mention for a absolutely superb Doodlespelling score (3847) and also Sully (1013),Albi (706),Kara (210) Devon and Ellis. All are well over their targets. Super work!

Eloise got another week of amazing DoodleEnglish scores and Iggy and Reuben had great Doodletables scores too. Excellent!

Everyone who reached their target (on green) this week “take a bow”, like we do in Friday’s assembly. Everyone who is also mentioned above take an extra bow! You are all FABULOUS!

I hope that you have managed to get back into your daily home learning routine again. Don’t forget to have regular breaks, give lots of praise and keep it fun!

 Science

Our new science topic is... Materials

Look around your house and garden. Can you name the different materials that things are made from?

Can you find things made out of metal, wood, plastic, fabric, wool and glass?

Now record your findings. Draw or write (see the attached sheets and don’t forget to look at the materials PowerPoint below).

Space

We were in the middle of our space topic just before we stopped school. We talked about the planets. If you look at the night sky now you might be able to spot the planet Venus, as it is shining very brightly at the moment. Have you seen the satellite train? What can you find out about it?

Oak National Academy

The Government has launched 'Oak National Academy' which is an online classroom and resource hub offering 180 video lessons each week. There are useful English and Maths lessons lead by teachers. I like the maths quizzes in Oak Academy but would prefer it if you used “White Rose” maths lessons for your main daily maths lessons, as we follow White Rose in school and the visual resources make it easier for the children to understand.

There are also other subject areas on 'Oak National Academy' like Art and Science that your child might like to spend time exploring.

The Oak National Academy can be accessed here:

The BBC have also launched an education package across TV and online, featuring celebrities and teachers.

BBC Bitesize can be accessed here:

White Rose maths units

These daily maths lessons are brilliant.

Make sure you have a pencil and paper or a white board (or print off the activity) so that independent tasks can be done by your child.

Home learning                                              20.4.20

Dear Blackbird parents, carers and class,

I hope you all had a super, sunny Easter holiday with lots of family fun!

I’ve given you lots of new challenges this week. You don’t have to do them all. Something is better than nothing. Your child’s well being is the most important thing.

Well done Blackbird Class! You are amazing! You have won the

Doodlemaths trophy again this week with a total of 896 stars, Y1-609, Y2-287.

A special well done to Charlotte, Eloise, Kara, Iggy, Ellis and Max who all got well above their targets for the week!

Ava deserves a special mention for a superb Doodletables score and Eloise got an amazing DoodleEnglish score. Super!

Albi, Ellis and Kara also did amazingly well in Doodlespelling this week.

If you have had a break from Doddle over the holiday, and I can see that some of you have, now is a good time to get back into it please.

How many of you have been doing the Doodlemaths Easter challenge?

Term begins again today so please try to get back into your daily home learning routine.

Have regular breaks, give lots of praise and keep it fun!

Doodlemaths /Doodletables may be a good start to the home school day.

Physical activity

This is very important to your well being, so please try to build in times across your day. It would work best if you all did this as a family! You can share the fun! Having an active “brain break” from learning at a table is very important.

Live PE with Joe Wicks is at 9am. But you can watch it anytime on Youtube. Last Friday he dressed up as Scooby Doo!

https://www.youtube.com/thebodycoachtv

Iggy’s Mum has been posting fitness routines on Facebook under “Mamadoo” fitness. GoNoodle has some fun routines and Cosmic yoga has also been popular too. Having a walk, playing a game of football, basketball, tennis, catch, tag and bouncing on a trampoline are all great too (Ruby and I have regular hockey or trampolining games between her home learning tasks-I think my skills are improving too!).

I am adding more measuring, including capacity skills, as extras to Doodlemaths this week.

Maths-measuring -capacity

Why don’t you fill a bowl or bath or paddling pool with water (add a few drop of food colouring if you have it) and lots of different sized lids/ containers and a measuring jug. Then see how many of one pot will fit into another? How many containers are more than 1litre? How many are less? Can you sort them?

Y2 – Can you measure different amounts using a measuring jug e.g 50ml, 100ml, 250ml.

Which containers hold more than 250ml? 500ml?

1000ml (1 litre). How much does a bucket hold? How could you measure this?

Is there a recipe where you can help with by measuring the liquid?

Don’t forget to measure liquid accurately you have to put the measuring jug on a flat surface and then bring yours eyes down to the level to read it.
